Spirit Lake, Iowa – The Iowa Department of Natural Resources issues a weekly fishing report on Thursdays in an effort to provide the latest Iowa DNRinformation heading into the weekend. The weekly fishing report is compiled from information gathered from local bait shops, angler creel surveys, and county and state parks staff. For more information contact the Spirit Lake fish Hatchery at 712-336-1840.

NORTHWEST

Storm Lake (including Little Storm Lake)

There is about 6.5 inches of ice in the east part of the lake, but the rest of the lake has around four inches. Walleye – Fair: Some walleye are being picked up on the east side of the lake off the east boat ramp and campground area.

Big Spirit Lake

Walleye – Good: Walleye still being caught off of Big Stoney Point. With ice thickness increasing, atv and snowmobile traffic should be safe at this point. The walleye are being caught using Minnows below a bobber. The bite is slow but many walleyes are being caught.

East Okoboji Lake

Channel Catfish – No Report: Limited fishing activity, foot traffic only.

Silver Lake (Dickinson)

Walleye – No Report: Poor ice conditions exist on the east end of the lake extending from the north to south shorelines.

osceolasheriffOsceola County, Iowa — A Sioux Falls man’s vehicle was damaged Christmas night when he struck a deer.  The Osceola County Sheriff’s Office says 58-year old Dennis Lee Verhey was eastbound on Highway 9 in a 2007 Lincoln when a deer ran into the path of the vehicle.

Deputies estimate $7500 damage to Verhey’s Lincoln.

No injuries were listed in the report.

Laurence Johannes age 96 of Sibley, IA, died Saturday December 27, 2014 at the Osceola Community Hospital in Sibley.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, December 31st at St. Andrew’s Catholic Church in Sibley, IA, with Fr. Alan Reicks and Fr. Timothy Hogan concelebrating.  Burial will follow at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Ashton, IA.

Visitation will be Tuesday, December 30th from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. with family present from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Jurrens Funeral Home of Sibley. There will be a Rosary at 5 p.m. and prayer service at 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

West Okoboji Lake

Yellow Perch – Good: Anglers report 6 inches of ice off the Triboji boat ramp.  Good catches of yellow perch and yellow bass has been reported; however sorting is in order as numbers of small fish is also being caught.

East Okoboji Lake

Channel Catfish – No Report: Limited fishing activity, foot traffic only.

Big Spirit Lake

Walleye – No Report: Limited fishing activity on Big Spirit Lake.

Center Lake

Crappie – No Report: Poor ice conditions exist from the boat ramp north including the whole north shoreline.

Silver Lake (Dickinson)

Walleye – No Report: Poor ice conditions exist on the east end of the lake extending from the north to south shorelines.

Storm Lake (including Little Storm Lake)

Travel on the ice is not advised.  Channel Catfish – No Report:

Five Island Lake

Bluegill – No Report: Thin ice conditions exist in Town Bay as this area was open and had limited ice cover prior to the latest ice up.

NOTE:  Limited ice fishing activity in the Spirit Lake District.  Lakes have variable ice thickness. The rain over the weekend has produced slushy ice conditions.

Bertha Mae West age 93 formerly of Sibley, IA, of Lakewood, CO died Saturday, December 20, 2014 at St. Anthony’s Hospital in Lakewood, Colorado.

Funeral service will be 1:00 p.m. Sunday, December 28th at the Jurrens Funeral Home of Sibley, IA, with Pastor Brian Schafer officiating.

Burial will follow in the Holman Township Cemetery in Sibley.

West Branch, Iowa — Iowa District 1 State Senator David Johnson of Ocheyedan has been elected to serve on the board of the Hoover Presidential Foundation.

The board re-elected 12 other members, including four executive officers.

The Foundation says that Johnson has been a long-time supporter and was a recipient of the Foundation’s Uncommon Public Service Award in 2008.

Johnson says that it is an honor to join the board and to help spread the word about this important Iowa resource.

The Foundation is a private, non-profit organization that supports the Hoover Presidential Library-Museum and Hoover National Historic Site in West Branch.
