Alice Brockshus, age 92 of May City, IA, passed away at the Prairie View Nursing Home in Sanborn, IA on Sunday, November 29, 2015.

Funeral services will be held Friday, December 4th at 10:30 a.m. at the St. John’s Lutheran Church in May City, IA. Visitation will be held Thursday, December 3rd from 2:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at the Hartley Funeral Home Chapel in Hartley with the family present from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Thursday evening. Burial will be held at Harrison Township Cemetery near May City. The Hartley Funeral Home in Hartley is in charge of the arrangements for 92 year-old Alice Brockshus of May City, IA.

Sheldon Orabs 2Sheldon Iowa — The Sheldon Orab girls basketball team hosted Sibley Ocheyedan in the Conference and season opener for both teams winning 56-30.

Sheldon opened a 17-7 first quarter lead and took a 30-12 lead into halftime. At the end of the third quarter the Orabs were up 46-17 going on to win 56-30.

Sydney Iedema led all scorers with 12 points. Kayla Van Meeteren, Kacy Kamphoff and Bailey Moret added 7 points each for Sheldon.

Sibley Ocheyedan was led by Britta Harberts with 9 points. Megan Grimes hit a pair of three pointers for 6 points.

Both teams will have the rest of the week off for the Thanksgiving Holiday returning to action next Tuesday with their first boys-girls double headers of the season.

Sheldon will be at George Little Rock while the Generals will be on the road as well traveling to Rock Valley.

fishingSpirit Lake, Iowa — The Iowa Department of Natural Resources issues a weekly fishing report on Thursdays in an effort to provide the latest information heading into the weekend. The weekly fishing report is compiled from information gathered from local bait shops, angler creel surveys, and county and state parks staff. For more information contact the Spirit Lake fish Hatchery at 712-336-1840.

NORTHWEST

Storm Lake (including Little Storm Lake)
Walleye regulations for Storm Lake are three fish per day, all fish between 17 and 22 inches must be released and only one over 22 inches may be kept. Walleye – Fair: Some anglers have picked up walleye in the east part of the lake from boat and from shore. White Bass – Fair: Some white bass are being picked up from shore with crawlers and while fishing for walleye. Anglers have had success fishing near the inlet.

Clear Lake
The lake is still ice free; other area lakes are starting to ice over. No fisherman activity this week to report. Yellow Bass – No Report. Walleye – No Report.

Lake Pahoja
Bluegill – Fair: Try ice fishing tackle tipped with maggots to find active fish.

Big Spirit Lake
Yellow Perch – Fair: Anglers are picking up a few perch in 18-20 feet of water on the south end of the lake. Silver and blue has been the hot color. Small minnows have been producing some larger fish. Walleye – Fair: Wader fishing in the evenings with live bait has been producing a few walleyes.

East Okoboji Lake
Walleye – Fair: Evening and after dark by the bridges has been producing a few walleyes. Try slower retrieves with the dropping water temperatures.

Minnewashta Lake
Yellow Bass – Fair: Anglers are finding a few yellow bass at the Sawmill bridge. Use smaller presentations with the cooling water as the fish will become less aggressive.

Silver Lake (Dickinson)
Walleye – Slow: Anglers have been catching a few small walleyes fishing from shore.

West Okoboji Lake
Bluegill – Fair: Anglers are catching average sized bluegills on the northwest corner of Smiths bay along the weed lines. Yellow Bass – Fair: Some nice yellow bass have been caught in Smiths bay on top of the weeds.

ighsauDes Moines Iowa — All District Volleyball Teams have been released by the IGHSAU and the KIWA listening area  is extremely well represented by both players and coaches. In Class 1A the Northwest District Coach of the year is Jamie Schar of Central Lyon who led her team to State for the third straight year. The 2A Northwest District Coach of the year is Tammi Verbeek of the State Champion Western Christian.

Molly DagelMolly Dagel, age 53, of Ocheyedan, Iowa, formerly of Sheldon, Iowa, passed away on Saturday, November 21, 2015 at Avera McKennan Medical Center in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be Friday, November 27, 2015 at 10:30 A.M. at the United Methodist Church in Sheldon, Iowa. Pastor Joe Chancellor officiating.

There will be no visitation and no burial.

Lyon Sheriff Facebook HeaderA Sibley woman slid into a semi trailer on Friday, November 20th.

The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office reports that at about 10:30 am, 21-year-old Michael Keller of Sibley was driving a 2000 Buick LaSabre westbound on Highway 9. Thirty-three-year-old Michael Koth of Alta was driving a 2008 Peterbilt pulling a 2009 Great Dane trailer was also westbound on Highway 9 in front of Keller. According to the report, Koth was slowing down to turn south on K-60/ Indian Avenue. Keller failed to provide a safe distance between herself and the vehicle in front of her. Keller struck the rear end of Koth’s trailer.

The Buick received $3,500 damage.

No injuries were reported.

Josie Vogel, age 90, of Sibley, Iowa formerly of Worthington and Bigelow, Minnesota passed away on Saturday, November 21, 2015 at Sibley Nursing and Rehab in Sibley.

Funeral Services will be Wednesday, November 25, 2015 at 10:30 A.M. at the Sibley Christian Reformed Church in Sibley, Iowa. Rev. Roger Bouwman officiating.

Graveside Services will be Wednesday at 1:00 P.M. at Roseland Cemetery, Sanborn, Iowa.

Visitation will be Tuesday, November 24, from 4:00 to 8:00 P.M. with the family present from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. at the Sibley Christian Reformed Church in Sibley.

ighsauIn the Preseason rankings for the 2015 High School Girls Basketball Season, George-Little Rock starts the season ranked at the 10 spot in Class 1A. Class 2A State Champion Unity Christian starts out at #1, while Western Christian begins at 3, and Okoboji rounds out the top 10. Spirit Lake and Cherokee are at #6 and 10 in Class 3A.
