Ocheyedan, Iowa — A few tense moments were experienced in Ocheyedan early on Thanksgiving morning.

According to the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office, they received a call for assistance at 1:04 a.m. requesting an ambulance for a person that fell.

Ocheyedan Fire Chief Dan Hartwig says someone was working on the top of the new feed mill, and was tied off, but he says the victim was tied off too loose and fell about 35 feet before the harness caught him. He says the victim’s arm and leg were tied up in the rope. That’s when 911 was called.

The Sheriff’s Office says Sibley & Ocheyedan Ambulances and Ocheyedan Fire & Rescue responders were dispatched. Hartwig says in the meantime, others were able to pull the victim back up to the top and then send him down in a personnel basket on the crane. By the time emergency responders arrived he was on the way down in the basket.

Hartwig says the injuries were not life-threatening. The Sheriff’s Office says the victim was taken to Lakes Regional Hospital in Spirit Lake.

The name of the victim is not being released by the Sheriff’s Office.

Ashton, Iowa — A house near Ashton was saved from fire damage after the occupants reported a chimney fire on Wednesday, November 22, 2017.

According to Ashton Fire Chief Rob Imhoff, about 4:15 p.m., the Ashton Fire Department was called to the report of a chimney fire two and a half miles west of Ashton and four miles south, near the county line; or about a mile northwest of Ritter.

The chief says they used water and a chimney stick product to fight the fire.

Imhoff says no injuries were reported.

Chief Imhoff reports that there was no damage.

He says they used about a hundred gallons of water to fight the fire, and crews were on scene for about 45 minutes.

Imhoff reminds people that if they burn wood in a fireplace or wood-burning stove, to have their chimney checked every year.

Statewide Iowa (Radio Iowa) — Thanksgiving weekend is easily one of the busiest periods of the year on Iowa roads, and traditionally, the deadliest.

Patrick Hoye, chief of the Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau, says the congestion increases the risk for crashes.

Over the past decade in Iowa, the state’s Department of Transportation reports the Thanksgiving weekend has produced 25-percent more fatal crashes than any other holiday weekend. The night before Thanksgiving is a particularly dangerous time because of alcohol-impaired drivers.

Hoye says if alcohol is in your celebration plans, plan ahead and name a designated driver.

Last year in Iowa, five people were killed in traffic crashes over the Thanksgiving holiday period – which began Wednesday evening and continues through Monday morning.

Northwest Iowa — Students who are on the Free & Reduced Lunch Program here in northwest Iowa, and across the state, will be the beneficiaries of a new program that aims to feed protein-packed sandwiches to needy children.

Allyson Ladd is marketing specialist for Iowa’s largest pork producer, Iowa Select Farms, which is starting what it’s calling the Power Snack program.

The program is now going statewide after it had been tried as a pilot program in several Iowa communities and Ladd says the coupons were a success.

She says recent studies find one in eight children in Iowa are food insecure, meaning they’re not sure where their next meal may be coming from.
