Northwest Iowa — The number of positive COVID test results in the past seven days has taken a nearly 103% jump over the previous week in our four-county area of O’Brien, Osceola, Sioux and Lyon counties, according to the Iowa Department of Public Health.

290 new positives were reported in the past seven days in the four-county area, that’s 147 more positive tests than the week before. Sioux County had the most positives with 143, the same number as last week’s total for all four counties. That’s up from 59 the week before. Lyon County reports 69 new cases this week, up from 30 the previous week. O’Brien County saw 56 positives during the past seven days, that’s up from 33 one week ago. And Osceola County reports 22 new positives, up one from the previous week’s total of 21, as reported by the IDPH.

There was one additional COVID-related death reported in the four-county area during the past seven days. A resident of Osceola County is reported to have succumbed to the virus, bringing the Osceola County total to 19 since the pandemic began. COVID-related fatalities in the other three counties include: 78 in Sioux County; 63 in O’Brien County; and 44 in Lyon County. The four-county total is now 204 since the beginning of the pandemic.

Adult vaccination rates have increased 0.2% in each of the counties in our area, with O’Brien standing at 61.4%, Osceola at 54.9%, Sioux at 52.5% and Lyon at 52.0%

Buena Vista County, here in northwest Iowa, remains the county with the highest rate of adult vaccinations in the state at 81.3%, while Davis County retains the distinction as the least vaccinated county in Iowa with an adult vaccination rate of 47.3%.
